Since their formation back in 1978, UB40 – probably one of the UK’s original English Reggae and pop bands – have had considerable success both here and internationally. Even with the break-ups and line-up changes over time, their fan base remains loyal. With over 50 UK singles, Ali Campbell and Astro are back with a new album, and are now on their 40th anniversary tour titled A Real Labour Of Love. This past Friday night saw Ali Campbell and Astro again gracing the stage at Aintree Racecourse to perform some of their most popular hits and they did not disappoint.

Synopsis

Starting with If It Happens Again, the UB40 artists were greeted by an enthusiastic audience full of energy and ready to dance the night away in steady rhythm. Proud to be back performing in Liverpool, the boys from Birmingham brought a range of amazing musicians with them, including an amazing saxophonist who was outstanding!
Astro also didn’t disappoint with his extremely dapper white suit and hat, and the same goes for the acoustics, which for an outdoor event were a credit to the artists.

The concert continued to delight the crowd of all ages, with a consistent stream of hits from You Look Better In The Dark and Kingston Town through to Fijian Sunset, all of which had the crowd bouncing and singing along. Credit was given to the young Jamaican Eric Donaldson prior to the rousing performance of Cherry Oh Baby. Fans stayed through to the end and were not disappointed to hear the night play out with the all-time classic that is Red Red Wine from 1983 – complete with red stage lighting!

Analysis

This was a real treat to enjoy live, and the performers seemed delighted to be there, performing to a very high standard. Credit should also be given to The Jockey Club for putting on a great event; it was extremely well-organised, and the event staff were attentive and supportive without being intrusive. Some of the raceday staff even got to see some of the concert with friends visiting, which was nice to see.

Summary

If you get chance to see UB40 on the rest of their tour, we would highly recommend going along and reliving some iconic tunes of the 80s and 90s.
