J.M. Barrie’s Quality Street
Northern Broadsides bring J.M. Barrie’s pre-Peter Pan classic Quality Street to Liverpool’s Playhouse Theatre.
The play which gave it’s name to the UK’s most popular confectionary – Quality Street – is to be brought to the Playhouse by much-loved company Northern Broadsides from Tuesday March 17-Saturday 21 March.
Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie penned the play for Broadway in 1901 before he gave the world the boy who wouldn’t grow up.
Set in a quaint Northern town against the backdrop of the Napoleonic wars, Quality Street follows the trials and tribulations of Phoebe Throssel.
Ten years since a tearful goodbye, an old flame returns from fighting the French army. But the look of disappointment on Captain Valentine’s face when he greets a more mature, less glamorous Phoebe, spurs our determined heroine to action.
She becomes the wild and sparkling Miss Livvy, a younger alter-ego who soon entraps the clueless Captain. A farce executed in true Northern Broadsides style ensues while a commentary from the Quality Street™ factory workers about their own hapless romances and growing old disgracefully add a further irreverent dimension to the production.
J.M. Barrie plays have an illustrious history at the Playhouse theatre, Quality Street being noted as a particular success of the theatre’s rep company season back in 1916.
This rare revival is Laurie Sansom’s directorial debut for Northern Broadsides as he launches a new era for the popular company. Soundscapes created from regency ballroom music and the machinery of the Quality Street factory have been innovatively composed by sound designer Nick Sagar for the piece.
