A new month has come around and that means a new selection of free games available to download for all those who hold subscriptions to PlayStation Plus. A fairly sparse line-up, with only two PlayStation 4 and one PlayStation 5 games on offer, however, in this case, quality always trumps quantity. So without wasting any more time, here are the PlayStation Plus free games in June 2021.

Star Wars Squadrons

Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Motive Studios
Genre: Flight Combat
Series: Star Wars
Released:  October 1st 2020
Certificate: 12
Console: PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/X/S, Microsoft Windows

May the fourth has been and passed, however, the inclusion of a Star Wars entry to PlayStation Plus had to wait an additional month. Our first entry on this list is Star Wars Squadrons, a space-flight combat game developed by Motive Studios and published by Electronic Arts. This is a unique entry to the Star Wars roster and a must-download for any fan of the franchise.

Taking place following Return of the Jedi, you take control of a fully upgradeable starfighter either on the side of New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron and the Galactic Empire’s Titan Squadron. They are competing over the completion or destruction of the Republic’s new weapons programme, project Starhawk. This plot is featured in both single-player and multiplayer components.

A visually stunning game, efficiently showcasing the capabilities of the Frostbite 3 engine and has received generally positive reviews of 7.5/10 from reputable reviewers.

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown

Publisher: Sega
Developer: Sega
Genre: Fighting
Series: Virtua Fighter
Released:  October 1st 2020
Certificate: 12
Console: PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/X/S, Microsoft Windows

The next game on this list is an updated port of a classic Sega fighting series, Virtua Fighter 5. Originally released back in 2006, Virtua Fighter follows the same gameplay functions as similar franchises such as Tekken and Street Fighter. Two characters face off in arcade-style button-combo combat and gradually reduce each other’s health bars by landing successive blows.

However, Virtua Fighter does not receive the same mainstream popularity as the aforementioned titles. This re-re-release (?) of Virtua Fighter 5 has received subtle visual upgrades so much of the original charm and experience is still present without looking or feeling outdated. Check out this comparison of the original and 2021 versions. Perhaps a revival or a new release in the series is on the books?

Many of you may be too young to remember Virtua Fighter 5, as it was released originally for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and legitimate arcades. If you are a fan of the Tekken, Mortal Combat or Street Fighter series, give this one a try.

Operation Tango

Publisher: Clever Plays
Developer: Clever Plays
Genre: Coop-Action/Casual
Series: Operation Tango
Released:  August 28th 2020
Certificate: 12
Console: PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/X/S, Microsoft Windows

The final title on this list is the PlayStation 5 exclusive, Operation Tango. This game requires two players and only one person to actually own the game. In this Clever Plays title, you and a friend must complete covert objectives as secret agents with one player to complete said objectives and the other to perform a ‘support’ role as a hacker, assisting the field agent in their mission. Communication through voice chat is essential.

A unique game on offer with not many reviews or feedback to base an opinion on, so there is little else that can be said about this title. Give it a try and see what you think. Final Words

So there are the PlayStation Plus free games in June 2021 All in all, not a bad selection but some of you may feel a little disappointed at the lack of hard-hitting triple-A titles (myself included). However, there is still a nice variety of offerings to be had to hopefully keep you occupied in June.

With an overall saving of roughly £74, there are some good savings to be had.

Verdict – 7/10 – Good
