Godzilla X Kong: New Empire hit cinemas earlier this year. It was also a return for Director Adam Wingard, who thanks to his success with Godzilla vs Kong was handed control of the sequel. So, without further ado let’s head into the Hollow Earth as we take a deeper look at Godzilla X Kong: New Empire…

Story of Godzilla X Kong: New Empire
The story of Godzilla X Kong: New Empire mainly focuses on Kong. With him feeling extremely isolated in the Hollow Earth. Roaming around he stumbles across some Great Apes, ones almost as big as him. It isn’t long before they start fighting. Kong even uses the smallest of the Great Apes as a hammer and hits the others with him. After the fight Kong warms up to the ape he had been using as a weapon. The little one guides him to the Scar King’s territory and Kong sees the Scar King controlling his own Titan. Kong sees the poor state he treats the other Apes and wishes to overthrow him. With him retreating to get backup from Godzilla.
Analysis
Tiamat
Tiamat is a Titan that lives in the Antarctic. Their design is akin to something Toho themselves would create, resembling Kaiju such as Ghidorah. The dragon/serpent design is sleek and scary. Their movement was shown to be like a giant underwater snake. Unfortunately, for Tiamat he had some tasty energy that Godzilla wanted. So, in order to steal his meal Godzilla kills Tiamat, ripping him to pieces as he proceeds to then much on his delicious energy source. Before promptly passing out in the Colosseum in Rome. Wrapping up with his tail like a cat. It is honestly the cutest scene of the whole MonsterVerse.
Scar King
The disappointing villain of the movie, Scar King didn’t really provide anything new to the series. His weapon was creative, and I loved how he had control of another Titan, but he felt lackluster. He or the other Great Apes never felt like a real threat. After hearing about the war between the Gojira and the Great Apes in the last film I wasn’t expecting any survivors. So it does feel a bit shoehorned in, to suddenly have a group of surviving Great Apes. The reason suffices, that they were a bad group who wished to revolt against the surface world, and as such was exiled.
But it just feels cheap. If he wanted to take over the surface world what have they been doing since the start of the MonsterVerse? Scar King’s weapon was creative, but the overall character was extremely lacking as a credible threat. Tiamat had a couple of minutes of screen time but still left a larger impression.
Monster Fights
The fights were enthralling all the way through. I loved the inclusion of comedy in these fights, especially with Kong. It seems Wingard uses Kong for the comedic moments and utilized Godzilla for the shock value. Its beneficial having the two Kaiju’s take different roles within the movie. Allowing Wingard to effectively switch tones just by having the other Kaiju fight next. This makes the fights feel fresh and unique. The fight of the film is hands down Godzilla vs Tiamat however! The fight is quick, gruesome, and by far the most memorable scene of the movie.
Mothra
The Queen returns. Shown to have ties to the Hollow Earth, the last surviving member of the Iwi tribe, Jia, manages to resurrect Mothra. She is also revealed to be on of many surviving Iwi with many living in the Hollow Earth unknown to the surface. The Queen of the Monsters quickly gets to work stopping Godzilla and Kong from fighting again. Making them work together with a single loud exclamation. Her design was magnificent. She looked magical as she flew around leaving sparkles as she goes.
Summary
Despite sidelining Godzilla for most of the film, Godzilla X Kong: New Empire sets up some good story beats for future films. It also expanded on the rich lore of the MonsterVerse, especially the Great Apes and the Hollow Earth. It is a shame that the film’s main villain, the Scar King, is a disappointment, but not every villain is going to hit the same heights of King Ghidorah or Mecha Godzilla. That being said, the fight scenes are enthralling, the monster designs marvelous, and it’s got some of the best acting in the series. If you haven’t yet you need to watch Godzilla X Kong: New Empire! I for one can’t wait for the MonsterVerse’s next installment.
Overall Rating: 8.5 – Excellent!
Recommendation: YES!
