Over The Limit 2011 had one classic match and one poor main event. That sums up the event in a nutshell, but let’s go into more detail on what you’d get from watching it on DVD.
After a graphic paying tribute to Macho Man Randy Savage, who had sadly passed away two days earlier, the event kicks off with a decent Rey Mysterio-R-Truth bout. After a match where Ezekiel Jackson repeatedly bodyslams Wade Barrett to almost no reaction, we then get Sin Cara’s PPV debut, which unfortunately has a major botch at the end, and would ultimately lead to the end of Chavo Guerrero’s long WWE tenure.
Rewatching Big Show & Kane vs. CM Punk & Mason Ryan, it’s hard to believe that WWE seemed to have higher hopes for Ryan than Punk at this point. Brie Bella vs. Kelly Kelly does little but fill air time, sadly. Then we get one of the best matches of 2011, a truly great battle between Randy Orton and Christian, which saves this card and provides evidence that an all-babyface bout can still garner a top-level crowd response.
Jerry Lawler finally ends his feud with Michael Cole in a short Kiss My Foot battle that features a surprise return by Bret Hart. Finally, The Miz pounds John Cena in brutal fashion for 20 minutes before quickly tapping to him in a weak I Quit match, also notable for Booker T on commentary describing the WWE Champion as having “limited skills”.
If Orton vs. Christian wasn’t here, this would have been a truly dire supercard. Okay, maybe it still is, but at least Over The Limit 2011 does have one must-see match.
