This is our DVD review for WWE Extreme Rules 2019. Even considering the modern digital climate and the likes of WWE Network allowing for instant access to its content, it really is amazing how quick the turnaround is for WWE PPVs to DVD these days. In the past, fans would have to wait around three months or more for, say, a WrestleMania to come to stores, and in the very early days, it could even take over half a year. Nowadays, though, it is taken for granted that shows come to DVD just six weeks after the supershow takes place. How cool is that? This is the latest DVD review for our site. So, let’s see what we think of Extreme Rules 2019!
Extreme Rules 2019 Under Card
Anyway, my blabbering aside, the eleventh annual Extreme Rules has its moments, beginning with the opening tag match that sees The Undertaker and Roman Reigns form a dream team against Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre. This is an energetic contest that masks the weaknesses of Taker at this stage of his career, thus causing critics to re-evaluate their perspectives on how long he will continue to wrestle, because this was his best match in a long time. The Revival vs. The Usos for the Raw Tag Team Titles is decent but nothing memorable, a disappointment considering what both combos are capable of, while Aleister Black vs. Cesaro is a fine hard-hitting scrap that serves its purpose rather nicely.
Bayley manages to overcome both Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross in a handicap match that surprisingly did not lead to the Alexa-Nikki break-up (well, not yet, anyway). Braun Strowman and Bobby Lashley then put on a very exciting Falls Count Anywhere match in a scrap that goes down very well in Philadelphia (incidentally, can you believe that at the eleventh time of asking, this was only the first Extreme Rules to be held in Philly?). Expectations are exceeded again by the SmackDown Tag Team Title three-way as Daniel Bryan and Rowan, Heavy Machinery and The New Day deliver a fun match that has a popular outcome.
Extreme Rules 2019 Main Events
AJ Styles and Ricochet bring their feud to PPV with another strong contest. The in-ring standard is at a new high nowadays, though. So, even a well-executed bout like this ends up being slightly unmemorable. Therefore, one cannot fault their efforts here at all. Kevin Owens then literally pins Dolph Ziggler in seconds with a Stunner to continue his career revival as the latest Austin-style anti-authority babyface (hence his finisher). Then, Kofi Kingston bests Samoa Joe in a WWE Title match, which is okay, I guess. But it lacks drama since very few people believed that Kingston would lose the gold here, at least against Joe.
That’s because of the post-match events after the main event of Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch vs. Baron Corbin & Lacey Evans. This Extreme Rules match is a bit uneven, with there being some crowd-popping high spots and there also being some real lulls. It’s a decent headline bout, though, and after the bell rang, Brock Lesnar chose to cash in Money In The Bank on Seth Rollins. The Beast struck again much to the chagrin of Seth, but to the delight of Kingston who avoided Lesnar’s wrath, for the time being anyway.
Extreme Rules 2019 Analysis
There are numerous DVD extras. One is the Intercontinental Title bout between Finn Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura. Another is the Cruiserweight Championship contest between Drew Gulak and Tony Nese. And there are segments involving the combatants in the opener and the WWE Title match from television.
Extreme Rules 2019 Summary
On the whole, WWE Extreme Rules 2019 has a lot to offer on DVD. This is especially true when throwing in the bonus material. The poorest matches are merely average, and there are some very good contests on the show (though none are classic material). If you’re looking for a fun card to watch on a quiet evening, Extreme Rules 2019 ticks the box.
Overall Rating: 7.5/10 – Good
