WWE Royal Rumble 2022
Royal Rumble 2022 Under Card
The show opens with a strong battle between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins for the Universal Title. Rollins’ Shield entrance is quite a moment, and the action itself is thoroughly compelling. Now, the finish received heavy criticism, yet DQs can work if they set up bigger rematches down the road. As of this writing, though, we’re yet to hear about when Reigns and Rollins will clash again. Hopefully, we get it sooner rather than later because there’s plenty of life left in this feud.
Next up, it’s the women’s Royal Rumble match. This has some fun spots as well as a plethora of returns from former stars. But it’s the comeback of Ronda Rousey that has the biggest impact. The sad part is that news was leaked beforehand, otherwise this could have been an iconic Rumble moment. Still, it doesn’t take anything away from Ronda’s victory, as she eliminates Charlotte Flair to win the match. And with Ronda vs. Charlotte at WrestleMania 38 being just weeks away, I am anticipating Rousey winning gold in Dallas.
Royal Rumble 2022 Main Events
Speaking of WrestleMania, Becky Lynch vs. Doudrop is most memorable for the Mania sign catching fire off-camera during the bout. Nevertheless, these two have a hard-hitting clash if you can focus solely on the action. The dream match between Brock Lesnar vs. Bobby Lashley, honestly, is a bit of a letdown. But we do get a significant moment as Roman and Paul Heyman play a major part in Lashley defeating Lesnar. Meanwhile, Edge & Beth Phoenix vs. The Miz & Maryse surpasses expectations and is one of the night’s best bouts.
The men’s Royal Rumble match ends the show. Unfortunately, it’s one of the dullest Rumbles to date. It isn’t entirely without merit, but it feels like minimal effort went into putting this bout together. It’s not an exaggeration to say that barely anyone will ever remember the match unless they watched it back. Part of the issue is that Brock Lesnar’s “surprise” participation was predicted by almost everybody beforehand. Therefore, the sight of Lesnar demolishing the remaining competitors to win went down like a lead balloon.
Royal Rumble 2022 Summary
I usually love the Royal Rumble, but the 2022 edition was a major disappointment. The two heavyweight title matches are worth watching, though neither are truly must-see for different reasons. Meanwhile, the undercard has its moments, but we’ve seen better from WWE on PPVs like this. And the men’s Rumble is actually worse than the 2011 and 2015 bouts, which I wouldn’t have thought possible beforehand. So, you may wish to wait for there to be a sale before getting this show on DVD.
