This is our DVD review for WWE Stomping Grounds 2019. The expectations beforehand? A likely bust, due to the creative malaise of Raw and SmackDown at that time. But often, the presumed flops end up succeeding and exceeding expectations. And this was no exception to this rule, which comes across again when rewatching it. This is the latest DVD review for our site. So, let’s see what we think of Stomping Grounds 2019!

Stomping Grounds 2019 Under Card

There aren’t any DVD extras, thus preventing the Cruiserweight Championship three-way between Tony Nese, Drew Gulak and Akira Tozawa. So, we open with Becky Lynch vs. Lacey Evans for the Raw Women’s Title. This is a bit underwhelming, partly due to some occasional botches by the somewhat inexperienced challenger. Better is the tag match pitting Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn against The New Day which had no reason to exist, but which ends up being very exciting nonetheless.

Next up, Ricochet captures the United States Title from Samoa Joe in an enjoyable clash of styles; this is followed by Daniel Bryan (who, despite his heel status, is super-over in his home state of Washington, with this show being held in Tacoma) and Rowan retaining their SmackDown crowns against Heavy Machinery in another fun tag bout, and Bayley facing Alexa Bliss for the SD Women’s Title in a match where the outcome was too close to call.

Stomping Grounds 2019 Main Events

Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre then put on the match of the night, a straight-forward yet high-intensity singles contest. This stands as Roman’s best bout since returning from illness earlier this year. Sadly, few will remember it due to The Undertaker’s return the following night overshadowing it. That comeback would lead to an Extreme Rules tag bout which is superior even to this battle. But hey, it’s a fun brawl to revisit.

Meanwhile, Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler inside a Steel Cage has its moments as well as boasting a creative finish. But Ziggler is such a weak challenger (even to underdog titleholder Kofi) that it lacks the drama one would prefer. And it only serves to reduce interest in Kingston’s reign as WWE Champion. Still, at least the reign continues by virtue of the victory here.

Stomping Grounds 2019 Analysis

That being said, it is still better than Seth Rollins vs. Baron Corbin. This Universal Championship match is a Raw-style battle filled with hijinks involving surprise special referee Lacey Evans, but Corbin’s dominance lasts so long and is very plodding. Consequently, fans turn on it in great numbers prior to Becky Lynch interfering. At least this makes for a climactic end to the show. But WWE continuing to run the Rollins-Corbin feud for another month seems bizarre when watching this main event back.

Stomping Grounds 2019 Summary

Though the two bookends for this card could have been better, the meat of the sandwich is mostly very enjoyable. A show with awesome matches like Roman vs. Drew and Ricochet vs. Joe is a definite success. But the poor main event balances that out, albeit not so much to ruin the card as a whole. So while Stomping Grounds 2019 is hardly WWE’s best supershow this year, it is still worth checking out for a few of the matches. And that’s more than many had anticipated beforehand.

Overall Rating: 6.5/10 – Okay
