Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool FC Match Report

The Reds travelled to North London to take on hosts Arsenal in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. After a disappointing first leg result at Anfield (0-0), a place at Wembley was in the sights for both sides. Diogo Jota was the name and football was the game as he scored a goal in each half (19′, 77′) that saw his side book their place in the final against Chelsea FC. Carabao Cup Semi-Final Second Leg, Thursday 20th January, 2022

Arsenal started the game with intent, knowing their cup competition hopes were hanging in the balance. Alexandre Lacazette provided some first half heart attacks by hitting the woodwork from a free-kick from a dangerous area. Kelleher making a subtle but crucial touch to keep the ball out of Liverpool FC’s goal. Speaking of Liverpool FC goals, Shortly after, a scuffed attempt from Jota following an impressive run beat the fumbling Ramsdale to make it 0-1. The visitors were a little lucky to have scored as the shot seemed half-hit. 

Later, Arsenal was saved by the post as Ibrahima Konate’ stood tall to head the ball, almost making it 0-2, for Ramsdale to keep the follow-up attempt from Henderson out. The offside flag went up following this sequence of play so it would not have stood anyway. Arsenal gives a sigh of relief, it stands at 0-1, only just.

Deep into the second half, Jota would challenge Arsenal once more, running in from an impressive pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold at the halfway line. Jota lifted the ball perfectly over Ramsdale to make it 0-2 on minute 77′. However, the away fans would hold their breath as the goal was called into question for offside. Eventually, VAR would rule it onside. Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool FC. 

Although the win was sealed for the Reds, the drama would not finish there. An erratic Thomas Partey, already receiving a yellow card would be shown a red for a late challenge on Fabinho at minute 90′. Meaning Arsenal finished the game in embarrassing form. Game set and match.

Liverpool FC was in the driving seat for most of the game, capitalising on their opportunities while Arsenal floundered theirs.
