Burnley 0-1 Liverpool FC Match Report

Liverpool FC was back in Premier League action on Sunday13th February, traveling away to Burnley’s Turf Moore to keep up with Manchester City, who comfortably beat Norwich City 0-4, albeit a game ahead of Liverpool FC. Characteristic of a tough lower-league away game, it was a wet and blustery affair that saw one goal separate two sides competing in physicality and endurance. That winning chance came from Fabinho (40′) scoring from a corner to relieve the away fans’ trepidation  of dropping points. Read on for our full Burnley 0-1 Liverpool FC match report.

Burnley 0-1 Liverpool FC

Premier League, Sunday, 13th February

Venue, Turf Moor

With Sadio Mane available for selection following his recent international exploits with Senegal, a traditionally familiar front-three started this fixture for the Reds. It boasted Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino alongside the AFCON 2021 winner as Diogo Jota was gifted a rest from the sidelines.

Chances are never frequent in this fixture so both sides would be looking to capitalise on any oppotunities. Naby Keita would provide an early test for Nick Pope, receiving the ball from Mane and shooting from just outside the box. However, the capable English stopper kept it out at the cost of a corner.

Looking to catch out Liverpool FC on the break, Burnley found themselves running the length of the pitch, starting from Ashley Westwood who found Jay Rodriguez and put Wout Weghorst one-on-one with Alisson before Trent Alexander-Arnold kicked it wide. Both sides would then have chances from free-kicks smothered by their opposing  goalkeepers, the match remained a stalemate.

On the cusp of halftime, Fabinho poked the ball past Pope after an Alexander-Arnold corner rebounded off Mane. A surge of relief for the traveling side.

Second Half

The second half proved to be much like the first, Liverpool FC received the bulk of limited chances but were unable to cement their victory. A combination of poor finishing and decent goalkeeping saw the second half see the Reds play out as winners.

The inclusion of Jota from the bench (67′) in place of Mane saw a perfect opportunity for the Portuguese forward to continue his impressive scoring run. Receiving the ball unselfishly from Salah, Jota, unfortunately, could not increase the advantage.

FT: 0-1

Final Words

There you have it, our Burnley 0-1 Liverpool FC match report. As Jurgen Klopp aptly stated after the match: ‘Everything was set up to be a banana skin for us’ (BBC) Such is the nature of this fixture, as many top sides have dropped points at this challenging ground and fixture. Burnley’s stalwart 4-4-2 has proven effective against attacking teams in the past and could have caused an upset here if not for Fabinho’s winner and their own misfiring forwards.

Although Sean Dyche was pleased with his side’s performance, Burnley remain bottom of the Premier League. However, Liverpool FC’s resolve meant they remain nine points behind league leaders Manchester City with a game in hand and a ‘six pointer’ at the Etihad still to play.
