Nottingham Forest 0-1 Liverpool

FA Cup Sixth Round, March 20th 2022

Venue: City Ground

After knocking out Arsenal and Leicester City on the path to this game, Nottingham Forest were brimming with confidence as they stepped out to a boisterous City Ground. The stands were packed out with their loyal fans, chanting, cheering and clapping on their side. Meanwhile, the ravelling Liverpool fans put in a respectable vocal performance of their own.

Wth a place at the Wembley semi-final wetting their apetites, both sides were playing on the front foot to try and take an early lead. The efforts of either side would not amount to much more than counter-attacks leading to half-hit shots from outside the box. Liverpool’s best chance came to Roberto Firmino, who received the ball in a dangerous area and was one-on-one with the Forest keeper. Sadly, his attempted chip was saved before Joe Worral cleared it out of harms way.

The second-half started in a similar vein to the first as both sides flexed their muscles in counter-attacking, forward passing and chalking any and all attemps. The football was pretty on the eye but the end product was toothless. Just after the hour mark, Jurgen Klopp decided to shae things up with a quartet of substitutions. Henderson, Thiago, Diaz and Minamino came on for Keita, Fabinho, Elliot and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

After a lucky escape at one end, Kostas Tsimkas provided the goods at the other. Sending over a wonderfully executed cross to find Diogo Jota stalking the Nottingham Forest penalty area, toeing the ball in to score his nineteenth of this campaign and claiming the win for his side.

Final Words

It is necessary to mention that Nottingham Forest away is of course a fixture that bares tragic history for Liverpool. The home side reserved 97 seats to honour those who lost their lives at the Hillsborough disaster. A very respectful tand touching ribute from the home side.

It seems to be a common theme for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, whenever they progress to a late stage of a cup competition or league position, there is a Manchester City-shaped obstacle in the way on the road to glory. That is exactly what stands in the way between Liverpool and the FA Cup final when they face  Pep Guardiola’s side at the Wembley-based semi final on April 16th.
