Transfer News Roundup: Who Should Liverpool Buy And Sell?

Introduction

Despite the latest January transfer window coming to an end over eight weeks ago, transfer news and rumours continue to be perpetuated, as they circulate and swirl around the top four Premier League clubs. In today’s football article, I will be looking at a few of these pieces of news and rumour sources. And I will see whether they have any factual basis or truth.

For instance, recent articles have appeared online from MSN.com, including information on potential transfer targets that Liverpool have been linked with. Joe Bray, for example, writes how “Man City should follow Liverpool FC transfer plan for Erling Haaland“. This is an interesting and intimidating, yet highly likely, possibility for the current Premier League title leaders.

Current Squad

However, I think, firstly, that Klopp and FSG should assess the current squad depth. This would mean analysing current fitness problems within the team, particularly with the midfield area and centre forward roles. We will also potentially be losing players from the bench in this position, such as Divock Origi.

Also, as our main problem with maintaining a high level of quality (in terms of performances and results) is fitness, it is hard to assess whether Klopp would be able to bring in anyone at this level who does not suffer from being injured prone. As an example, I would use fifth-placed West Ham’s recently injured Jarrad Bowen, who has been a transfer target of Klopp’s for a while.

Key Players To Buy

Next to consider is who to bring in. Come to think of it, I can’t see any area that really needs improving – maybe a new centre back to cover for Konate when Matip is out? Even our second goalkeeper, Kelleher, has shown his capability over the course of this season.

This doesn’t necessarily mean we shouldn’t be bringing in anyone. Especially considering release clauses will soon trigger for some of the bigger players. But we should consider the potential current team chemistry and spirit before rushing in to buy anyone.

Key Players To Sell

We must also ponder whether any players are no longer suitable for the club. As already suggested, Origi could be on his way to the Serie A with AC Milan. However, this is more than likely a contractual disagreement rather than a failure to show his quality. Supposedly, we should move on from players who aren’t performing to a high standard.

However, there is nobody I can think of who isn’t meeting their level of expectation based on quality. So, there remains the question as to what Klopp should do.

Summary

Overall, I think it will be tough for Klopp in the next transfer window to make any bids for players owing to the strength of the reserves. The current successes make it difficult to consider upcoming changes to the squad for the next few seasons.
