Best Digimon World Games Ranked
Digimon has forever been my preferred of all the creature collector franchises. The original Digimon Adventure anime was one of my favourite shows as a kid and it still holds up! Originally, conceived as a spin-off from Tamagotchi Digimon has blossomed into its own. With the IP having various games, TV series, and movies, we will be focusing on looking at the Digimon World games. Here are the Digimon World games ranked!

Digimon World Games Ranked: 7 – Digimon World 4
Digimon World 4 released in for the. It deviated from the previous instalments by being a whole other genre of game, that being hack & slash. It saw you equip your Digimon with various weapons which just seemed off from the get-go. The whole game feels as if someone with no idea what Digimon was were tasked to create it. Apart from the actual Digimon nothing in the game remotely resembles anything iconic from the franchise. Which is why many fans see it as the worst Digimon game of all time never mind the worst DW game of all time!
Digimon World Games Ranked: 6 – Digimon World 2
The first deviation from the established gameplay mechanics and genre was Digimon World 2, which was more of a turn-based dungeon crawler. Players are able to make teams of three Digimon increasing it from the previous game where you could only have one Digimon at a time. You can see a lot of this game influenced, at least in part, the Digimon Cyber Sleuth games with them featuring dungeons, teams of three, etc.
The biggest gropes with the game were the maze like dungeon designs and the sheer pace of the game. With many players choosing to speed up the game with emulators or a game shark.

Digimon World Games Ranked: 5 – Digimon World 3
Known as Digimon World: 2003 in Europe and Australia, due to DW2 not being available in them territories. DW3 is an RPG like the previous entrees and was released on the PlayStation in 2003. The story starts with the player, Junior, who begins playing an MMORPG titled ‘Digimon Online’. Which serves as the game’s introduction to the digital world and the digital monsters. The game follows more of a JRPG style with the game taking inspiration from games such as Final Fantasy VII or Legend of Dragoon. Players have the ability to choose which three Digimon will make up their party at any given time, digivolving them to make them stronger.
DW Games Ranked: 4 – Digimon World: Dawn/Dusk
Digimon World: Dawn & Dusk was released on the Nintendo DS and featured dungeon mechanics much like the second instalment. Again allowing players to create their own teams of three Digimon. Each game differed as they both featured their own unique parallel storylines. Players recruited Digimon by acquiring scan data, which is rewarded when defeating Digimon. The game received mixed reviews but still holds a passionate, if small, fanbase.

Digimon World Games Ranked: 3 – Digimon World
The original Digimon World game debuted on the PlayStation in 1999 based on Bandai’s Digimon Virtual Pets. Many features remain in the game that can be seen to have been heavily inspired by iconic mechanics on the Tamagotchi’s such as feeding your Digimon. As well as feeding your tasked with cleaning up after them, as well as training them, with them digivolving depending on various stats. The game sees the player seek out Digimon to bring back to Floatia. With quest mainly consisting of fetch quests or battles. It still ranks as many Digimon fans favourite game of the franchise.
Digimon World Games Ranked: 2 – Digimon World Championship
Released on the DS Digimon World Championship took more inspiration from the franchise’s Tamagotchi origins. Having the player utilize the stylus to pick up their Digimon and move them around the different training areas they could acquire. You collected Digimon by going out on expeditions to capture them with a lasso! It does get a bit tedious, but I actually really enjoyed this mechanic, it’s similar to capturing in the Pokémon Ranger games.
Battling followed more of the initial games’ style, having the player spectate whilst their Digimon duke it out in the championships. I liked this although at times you can be left feeling powerless to help your Digimon in the later fights.

Digimon World Games Ranked: 1 – Digimon World: Next Order
Setup as a direct sequel of DW1, Digimon World: Next Order is the latest instalment of the series. The biggest difference being that the Digimon was increased from one to two, which played into the newly introduced mechanic of fusing your Digimon. This was something you could do once a day and would increase your Digimon likelihood of defeating any opponent, with them reverting back after battle.
You are tasked with finding Digimon and bringing them back to Floatia, increasing its population. With several story points, and various Digimon held behind population goals. Looking after the Digimon’s every need can seem daunting at first but through experience becomes something very manageable.
