Beyond Blue – Game Review

Sick of all the fast paced action of most modern titles? Want to relax and enjoy some of Earth’s most majestic wildlife? Then Beyond Blue is the game for you! I first encountered the game way back at Eurogamer 2019! Playing as a marine biologist you will spend the course of the game falling in love with the vast blue of the ocean. As well as the many creatures that in habit it. Finding yourself lost for time as you follow a whale shark for what feels a few minutes but ends up being closer to an hour. The game perfectly captures ocean exploration, all be it on a minor scale. This maybe due to the game utilizing stories and footage used for Blue Planet 2. With that said let’s hurry up and take a dive into Beyond Blue…

Story of Beyond Blue

As mentioned before, you play as a marine biologist, Mirai, whose sole mission is to document a family of sperm whales. She is fascinate with the aquatic mammals and their social and family structure. Her goal is to find a pod with a baby then watch how they all interact with one another. Eventually, watching the baby grow into a mother herself so she can document how the sperm whales develop and grow into new roles in their social circles. Her dives are sometimes livestreamed all over the world through the company OceanX. With help of two other scientists Mirai uncovers a mining operation and helps report it to the authorities. However, it is too late, and the underwater drilling has already taken it’s effect on some of the wildlife.

Analysis of Beyond Blue

Pros

What Is The Indie Game, Beyond Blue?

The narrative was truly enthralling. Having me play it in it’s entirety in only two sessions, it must be said the game is only around 2-3 hours depending on how much exploration you do before you complete the story. Characters were brought to life by superb performances. There wasn’t a singular bad performance. You really came to feel for the people in Mirai’s life and really got invested into her family troubles.

Scanning was a brilliant game mechanic that allowed players to both, act like a real marine biologist and learn more about the creatures they were scanning. I loved watching the reef sharks in particular. Their circular movements are mesmerizing to watch.

Cons

Beyond Blue Review

Despite being a game about the vast oceans and the wildlife that inhabit it, we see a very poultry amount of ocean life. Obviously the developers couldn’t include every fish known to man but, a couple more diverse inclusions wouldn’t have gone amiss. It would have also been beneficial to see the hunting methods used by other animals.

The game’s short length was another con. The world was so engaging I just wasn’t ready to leave yet. Although you can free-dive in any location once the story is completed it would have been nice to get more scripted narrative. It was the best thing of the game and with it only being around 2 hours long leaves fans of it craving more.

On the default settings Beyond Blue ran amazingly well on the Steam Deck. I got around 2/3 hours battery life on it. I could have reduced the settings and squeaked out more life but the amazingly designed creatures and beautiful blue ocean required the best output.

Summary of Beyond Blue

Beyond Blue Review - Beyond the Shallows, Into the Blue

Although Beyond Blue’s ocean doesn’t compare to the real thing, the instances it does try to emulate for our enjoyment are truly fascinating. The team would have had an uphill climb trying to program a perfect emulation of the vast ocean and all the life beneath the waves. However, the focus on the whales and the few shark species that acted realistically was breathtaking.

It may have been on a small “unrealistic” scale but realistically the developers focused on delivering the best moments possible with the whales and other encounters that fit with the narrative, over focusing on the whole wide ocean. I think this made the game feel a lot more personal. Mirai was hyper focused on the whales and that’s what we saw the majority of. I like to think that we just saw the ocean through Mirai’s view. Also, I just love ocean wildlife so any game that can emulate that ecosystem, even in just a small way, will always have my attention.
