After the topsy-turvy year of 2020, many may turn to the Nintendo Switch to satisfy their need for next-gen retail therapy.Sony and Microsoft fans will likely have a many questions before making the Switch to Nintendo (get it?), above all else, which model best suits you?  Read on for our Nintendo Switch vs. Nintendo Switch Lite comparison.

Unfortunately, this is neither a quick or easy question to answer. So here is a breakdown of the two systems side-by-side to hopefully give you all of the information you need to make the right choice.,

Specs and Hardware

The first notable difference between the two systems is the size. The standard model boasts a 6.2-inch screen whereas the Lite falls slightly shorter at 5.5 inches with reduced bevels. Both systems do feature 1280X720 LCD screens, however. A slight difference, so this one is entirely down to your personal preference. I prefer the slightly larger screen on the standard Switch.

The battery life of both consoles is another area of contrast with the standard Switch clocking in at roughly 4.5-9 hours of use compared tot eh Lite’s inferior 3-7 hours. Of course, this will ultimately vary depending on what the Switch is doing. Playing power-intensive games, maintaining full screen brightness and using sleep mode excessively will drain your system in no time. However, the longevity of the standard Switch is a big  advantage.

Accessories/Features

As far as extra accessories and features are concerned, there is no competition. The standard Switch has the ability to connect to a TV dock and project a resolution up to 1080p. Additionally, the removable Joy-Cons serve as external, motion-sensing controllers. There is also the option of attaching the console to a table-top stand and the Joy-Cons to a dedicated gamepad to use close-up. The versatility of the Joy-Cons is potentially a deciding factor.

The Lite, however, functions entirely as a handheld unit with no removable Joy-Cons. This means no TV functionality, motion sensors or external controllers. An undeniable gulf in functionality options between the two systems. But certainly not a decision-maker for some people and the Lite model, particularly if there is less of a need to use it beyond the handheld mode.

Games

Modern consoles are generally divided more by their exclusive games than system differences, whereas the two Switches share a large catalogue of games but the Switch Lite is minutely limited in comparison. Games that require the use of motion sensing Joy-Cons are not compatible with the Switch Lite, granted, this is a very small list. All of the ‘core’ titles that would entice you to buy a Switch are playable on both systems.

Hardly a game-changer (pun intended) for most people, unless you had a burning desire to play Ring Fit Adventure or Just Dance? It is fair to say Lite owners are not missing out on too much. You can still play acclaimed titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Super Mario Odyssey  on either console.

Pricing

Possibly the most important factor for many of you, how much will you be set back? All things considered here, it is no surprise to discover the two systems are not equally priced. After all, they are inherently different devices.

The current retail cost for the Nintendo Switch, excluding bundles, is $299/£279.99 depending on where you purchase it from. Whereas the Switch Lite, excluding bundles, amounts to roughly $199.99/£199.99. Given all of the extra gadgets and gizmos on offer for the ‘full-fat’ Switch model, the added cost is quite fair.
