Kādomon: Hyper Auto Battlers – (Early Access) Game Review

Kādomon: Hyper Auto Battlers is another roguelike take on the popular Pokémon formula. Somewhat similar to Evolings and Automon. The game even had a free prologue released earlier this year allowing players to try the game out before its initial early access launch, which was earlier this week. Do you have what it takes to make it through Kādomon: Hyper Auto Battlers?

Kādomon: Hyper Auto Battlers takes a very familiar approach to runs as games like Evolings and Automon. Where you start by selecting one creature and set out to conquer every boss until you reach the ultimate boss. Kādomon has three acts you have to complete before reaching the final boss. With victories granting money, items, Kādomon, XP, and more. It is key to utilize synergies in order to progress through all three acts. Not to worry though! As with 180 different Kādomon you will have plenty to pick from. Allowing all kinds of replay ability as you experiment with other teams and synergies.

Kādomon: Hyper Auto Battlers, like the name suggests,is an auto-battling roguelike. After starting the fights, you won’t be able to control your Kādomon. The victory or loss will be entirely in their hands. This pushes you to think cleverly about synergies and team layout. Is that Kādomon best starting in 1st or 2nd or being a last line of defence? You will find yourself asking these questions a lot as you try out new teams and strategies. It is a very think heavy game, if you want it to be, you can also ignore the synergies and just turn your brain off for a run or two. Just picking any Kādomon that you wish as you play. Although playing this way may result in a early defeat.

As mentioned before, there is 180 different Kādomon. Ranging in types, and appearance, they all have three levels/stages. In which they gain more powerful abilities and upgraded stats. I found myself trying to level up as many Kādomon as possible. Just to see the possibilities. For me you can’t beat the feeling of wonder and curiosity that you have in these games when you’re evolving a creature for the first time.

To summarize, Kādomon: Hyper Auto Battlers is a fun roguelike creature collector, but it does come off confusing. Too much needs to be explained at the start it can be a lot to cement into your brain. The item combining mechanic is intriguing, but I didn’t manage to find any that actually went together without googling. So, this become a huge time waste. Once I knew what you could combine I knew to keep an eye out for it in shops and became much easier to combine items. Shops as a whole provide a brief respite and a chance to upgrade your team with items and new Kādomon. As well as unload anything you don’t need.

The boss does need some nerfing but this and other issues can all be addressed in the early access. However, it is a fun game. It’s gameplay loop, although swamped with other mechanics, is enthrallingly simple. So if you can justify paying twice as much as you would for a copy of Evolings or Automon, then by all means go buy this game right now! Otherwise I’d wait for a sale.
