Vampire Hunters – (Early Access) Game Review

I first started playing Vampire Hunters back when it was still just the classic mode and have watched it continuously grow. The game now features two modes: Survivors and Classic. Numerous weapons, characters, skills, and maps. It is a perfect roguelike shooter to turn your brain off and let your worries drain away. Here is my thoughts on Vampire Hunters…

In Vampire Hunters you play as, the name suggests, a vampire hunter. Either in Classics or Survivors modes your job is to mow down the oncoming, never ending waves of undead creatures. Careful movement is a must as one wrong turn can see you cornered and quickly overwhelmed!

Enemies and Weapons

Enemy design is creative and shows passion for undead creatures. There is an impressive range of enemies as well. Ranging from more traditional ghouls and vampires to more grotesque creatures. Bosses however are the cream of the crop having the best design, attacks, and AI. The same impressive variety can be seen in the choice of weapons. With an impressive amount available to the player via leveling up from the start. And even more being unlocked through certain goals/achievements. Levelling up the weapons provides a noticeable change in damage as well unlike some roguelikes where it seems your levelling up a potato gun.

Two Modes for the Price of One

As mentioned in the intro Vampire Hunters comes with two modes. The classic it launched with, and the newly updated Survivors mode. Classic takes you along various hallways as you walk/run down them defeating enemies until you encounter a final boss. Whereas survivors mode is more like Nazi Zombies. It’s more of an open world map, which you can maneuver freely in. And contains multiple bosses.

Performance on the Steam Deck

Gameplay runs smoothly on the Steam Deck and doesn’t drain the battery, unlike a vampire would your blood. The graphics and weapon effects pop vibrantly on the Deck’s display. It has been one of my more frequent games on the go over the last year, and I don’t see that stopping anytime soon. With updates constantly adding new things to the game, I always have another reason to go back.

Vampire Hunters is an amazing take on the roguelike genre. The sheer variety of abilities, weapons, and characters will have you astounded. You will find yourself playing multiple runs just to try out the new weapon you just unlocked. Weapons are also extremely fun to use and the upgrades are noticeable. Unlike some games the levelled up weapons actually pack a punch. With some level ups even granting unique abilities. The ease of gameplay and allowing the player to just aim rather than aim and shoot creates such a relaxing experience. If you love shooters or roguelikes Vampire Hunters is a must buy!
