4 – Godzilla

The start of the Monster Verse, Godzilla (2014) saw the return of the Kaiju to American cinema. After the atrocious Tristar produced film was so horribly received. Starting on a massive positive, Legendary made sure to get the design of Gojira right. This meant depicting a more faithful yet modern adaption of the iconic monster. Godzilla (2014) also took a brave risk in repeating an issue that the Tri-Star film had- no ionic monsters. Godzilla as a franchise had countless other Kaiju to pull from. Some of the most famous being Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah all of which were included in the sequel. The films production team opted with designing their own monsters for the king to go up against. These were the MUTOs. A unique and creative take on Kaijus.

3 – Godzilla King of the Monsters

King of the Monsters was the 2019 sequel to Godzilla. There was going to be one big difference this time around, Kaijus! The production team pulled from Godzilla’s impressively diverse rogues gallery to find not one, not two, but three iconic Kaijus from Godzilla films. Differing as this franchise as went on calling them Titans. Perhaps just to have a unique western adaptation of Godzilla. Either way the 3rd American produced Godzilla film was the best to come so far upon its release. King Ghidorah looked majestic and terrifying all in one. Rodan glided through the skies demanding everyone’s attention. Sadly, however we do say goodbye yet again, to Mothra, the queen of the monsters!

The first Godzilla film performed so well that a sequel was green-lit in its opening weekend. With Gareth Edwards expected to return in order to film a trilogy. However, this fell through as in May 2016 Edwards left the project. And thank god he did otherwise they never would have brought aboard Wingard!

2 – Kong: Skull Island

Arguably the best King Kong film to date, Kong: Skull Island exploded onto the big screen back in . The perfect pairing of MCU talent Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson is delightful to watch. They bring it all. Drama, action, comedy, and suspense. The film features a military squad going to Skull Island to explore. It brings a very Predator like feel to the movie, something that it greatly benefits from. Action is superbly choreographed, performed, shot, and edited. It truly was one of the, if not the, best action film of the year. Explosively announcing that Kong still had more to offer the big screen.

1 – Godzilla Vs Kong

Adam Wingard’s masterpiece, Godzilla vs Kong came out during Covid-19 and rejuvenated hope for the industry. Having had the best opening of the pandemic, at time of release, it was clear Wingard was right at assuming everyone wanted a crossover. Something that originally happened in 1963, we finally got to see a rematch between the Kong and the Kaiju. A wait that was most definitely worth it. Specifically, I loved the hollow earth story arc and the action scene in which Godzilla claws Kong’s chest. Action was brilliantly written. The two monsters acted like beats, like animals which made the fighting that more enthralling. Having this sense of credible animal behaviors really helped bring the film to life so well.
