Well let’s weigh in on the debate over whether James Gunn has the abilities to save the DC Universe by reviewing his first attempt: The Suicide Squad. Now while the film may have bombed at the box office, it did a lot better critically and with (some) fans, The Suicide Squad was a hell of a better film than the 2016 Suicide Squad. So with James Gunn’s DC Universe set to unveiled in the next month’s, what better time to review the Suicide Squad? So without further ado let’s get into my review.

The Suicide Squad follows the titular squad as they aim to topple the corrupt government of an island nation. And yes that’s uncomfortably close to the history of America interfering with Latin American countries if you think about it. Anyway, this Suicide Squad is largely different other than Harley Quinn (Robbie) and Rick Flag (Kinnaman). Oh and Amanda Waller (Davis) but she’s not technically on the Squad so yeah. Anyway, the rest of the Squad is made up of Bloodsport (Elba), who definitely isn’t Deadshot, Peacemaker (Cena), who definitely isn’t Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2, Polka Dot Man and everyone’s favourite talking shark voiced by Rocky, King Shark or Nauaue. So, as you can imagine there’s a lot of chaos when this Squad is sent to topple Corto Maltese’s government and maybe a giant talking Starfish as well. So, without further ado let’s jump into the analysis portion of the review now.

John Cena’s Performance in The Suicide Squad

To begin my analysis of The Suicide Squad, I’m going to discuss John Cena’s performance as Peacemaker. So, given that he’s got a very spin off show it’s obviously a very good performance. And you’d be right as Cena is one of the best performances in the film which is really saying something. Take the scene of Peacemaker confronting Flag about the drive which shows the US Government’s experiments on Corto Maltese’s people.

Here, Cena delivers a brilliant performance where he tries to convince Flag that there was a genuine reason for the US to torture Starro and innocent citizens. Also, kudos to Joel Kinnaman who also really makes Flag seem genuinely sympathetic after his chicken chopping, exposition filled performance in the 2016 film. Anyway, Cena also has some very funny moments in the film like him in the briefing room where he’s taking notes while cracking wise. Honestly, check out Peacemaker as well as The Suicide Squad after this….

Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad

Continuing my analysis of the Suicide Squad, I’m going to discuss the incredibly different Harley Quinn performance. To be fair that could be said about all of Robbie’s performances as Harley but in the best way. So in The Suicide Squad, she’s now a romantic type with delusions that lead her to believe she’s making people bleed flowers. Now while it’s a great performance and even better fight scene, it once again raises the question about what sort of Harley Quinn DC wants to go for.

This is mostly due to The Suicide Squad being the third different director to take on Harley Quinn and arguably the least weird take which is really saying something. Anyway, Robbie’s performance is very fun with her aforementioned flower action scene and also her stabbing a giant alien starfish in the eye. So really it’s one of her funnier and weirder performances which really fits into the vibe of the Suicide Squad.

Idris Elba’s Performance in the Suicide Squad

To conclude my analysis of the Suicide Squad, I’m going to discuss the performance as Idris Elba as definitely not Deadshot: Bloodsport. So, naturally it’s a very good performance especially with the scene where his daughter visits him in prison. This is where Elba’s comedic chops shine through with the fantastic line ‘I care you got busted stealing something stupid as a damn TV Watch!’. Now that’s just phenomenal from both Gunn and Elba there.

Other great highlights of his performance include the scene of him and Peacemaker trying to outmurder resistance fighters and him walking away from Waller’s orders. Naturally, this is made even more emotional by the fact that it helps his daughter forgive him by doing the right thing. It also acts as a great motion of The Squads humanity and all because of Bloodsports rare moment of humanity. So really there’s a lot to love about Elba’s performance in the Suicide Squad….

To summarise The Suicide Squad, this is a fun, violent and hilarious soft reboot of the Suicide Squad failure in 2016. While it may have bombed at the box office, all of the squad seem to have a bright future in Gunn’s DC Universe so there’s a positive….
