Deep Blue Sea Director’s Next Movie is Another Shark Thriller- Deep Water

Deep Blue Sea made a massive impact when it released in 1999. The film had a very interesting premise, trying to use sharks to cure Alzheimer’s, that while featuring Sci-Fi elements was very grounded. Many critics, me included, rank Deep Blue Sea very highly. With it being one of the best shark films and creature features to ever be released. Starring an impressive ensemble featuring the likes of Samuel L Jackson and LL Cool J, amongst others. The chef and the parrot will forever be two of the most memorable movie characters I ever have the delight of seeing.  So, let’s take a look a deeper look into, Renny Harlin’s new shark film- Deep Water.

Releasing in 1999, Deep Blue Sea was Harlin’s first commercially successful film since 1993’s Cliffhanger. The film utilized the water tanks that had been built for James Cameron’s blockbuster epic Titanic. Like Jaws it also used some shots of real sharks, although the majority were CGI or animatronic. Deep Blue Sea went on to make $165million against a $60-82 million budget making it a massive success. Especially since other shark/creature feature films hadn’t shown themselves to be that commercially successful.

It was no surprise then that SyFy decided to continue the series, the only surprise is that it took over a decade and a half to do so! Dropping ever character from the original wasn’t the best idea either. It would have made more sense to do a spiritual successor series rather than so called direct sequels. Both Deep Blue Sea 2  and Deep Blue Sea 3 were released straight to DVD.

Harlin has proven himself to be a master of his craft, delivering multiple blockbuster horror and action films. From his early work on Nightmares on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and Die Hard 2 to Deep Blue Sea and his more recent work The Strangers trilogy, the Finnish talent has shown himself to be able to deliver memorable films that make a lasting impact. Sadly, the director has also been nominated for six different Worst Director Golden Raspberry Awards (never winning the actual Director award). Being nominated as recently as 2022 let’s hope that Deep Water turns out to be a return to form for Harlin.

The synopsis of the movie on IMDb reads as, “A group of international passengers en route from Los Angeles to Shanghai are forced to make an emergency landing in shark-infested waters. Now they must work together in hopes to overcome the frenzy of sharks drawn to the wreckage”. Originally planned as a sequel to Bait 3D it was scrapped in 2014 due to the Malaysia Airlines Flight disappearance. Before Gene Simmons announced that the first film his new company would make was to be the previously canned Deep Water. Directed by Renny Harlin and written by Pete Bridges, Shayne Armstrong, and S.P. Krause. The film also has an impressive cast with both Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley starring in the shark horror!
