This is our review of Blood Brothers at Liverpool‘s Empire Theatre!

Synopsis Of Blood Brothers

One of the greatest and most emotional British theatre shows returns to its Liverpool roots. Unusually, we see the ending at the very beginning, which I won’t spoil here. But even with this knowledge, it’s fascinating to discover the true story of the Johnstone twins. Furthermore, it’s heartwrenching to learn how things could turn so sour for two incredibly close relatives.

So, we meet the Johnstone twins, who are as close as anyone could be. Along the way, though, we discover that Mrs Johnstone had previously made a decision that comes back to haunt her. And while she tries to keep strong, there are threats to the family that change their futures forever. By the finale, the once-unbreakable bond of the Johnstone twins feels like a mirage. Because as strong as their love for one another was, their eventual tragedy is so much more powerful.

Analysis Of Blood Brothers

This performance was part of a special gala evening to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Liverpool Empire Theatre. The whole evening was immaculate, with balloons, speeches, piano players, champagne, and singers. The Empire is a crucial staple of Liverpool’s culture, and it was an honour to celebrate a full century for the theatre.

As for the show; well, it was incredible as always. Those who know the story will still weep; first-time viewers will struggle to contain themselves. The story is so relatable, and so emotional, that it’s impossible to keep a dry eye. Not least due to the exceptional performances of the cast. Sean Keany plays his part as the somewhat spooky yet always honest Narrator very well. But Niki Colwell Evans steals the show as Mrs Johnstone, a role she plays with superb authenticity. This is doubly impressive based on her capably filling the mighty shoes of Lyn Paul.

Summary Of Blood Brothers

What better way to celebrate 100 years of Liverpool Empire Theatre than with the greatest homegrown show of them all. This is absolutely exceptional and deserves all the praise it consistently receives. If you know the show already, make sure to see it again and again. But if you’re a newbie to the production, it’s a must-see; just prepare to wipe away plenty of tears.
