This is our review of Ghost The Musical at Liverpool‘s Empire Theatre!
Synopsis Of Ghost The Musical
If you’re familiar with the smash-hit 1990 movie, you know what to expect. But if you’re new to this supernatural story, prepare for a truly out-of-body experience! It’s a story built on love, heartbreak, life and death, but also life after death …
So, lovers Sam Wheat and Molly Jenson are heading home one night. But tragedy strikes and the end result sees Sam lose his life in a horrific assault. Molly is understandably distraught with nowhere else left to turn. That is until she sees a psychic (Oda Mae Brown), whose skills are, admittedly, debatable. But through this medium, Molly communicates with Sam, who is between worlds following his death. And he alerts Molly to further danger on the way. Can Sam save Molly from losing her life too?
Analysis Of Ghost The Musical
This is one of those shows where you just sit back and enjoy the ride. For a story laced with sadness and tragedy, there is also real humour especially with the aforementioned psychic. By suspending one’s disbelief, you can absorb everything that you see and believe the real struggle that Molly is facing. And the dramatic stage directions and lighting add an extra sense of gravitas to the weighty plotline.
It also helps that there are strong performances all-round. Rebekah Lowings is fantastic as Molly, and Jacqui Dubois arguably steals the show in her role as Oda. Both have played these characters many times and it shows; both are totally believable and almost typecast as these people. Les Dennis also puts in a very good showing, as do Josh St. Clair and James Mateo-Salt. Oh, and the music is spellbinding, particularly the rendition of the iconic Unchained Melody.
