This is our review of Girls Don’t Play Guitars at Liverpool‘s Royal Court Theatre!
Synopsis Of Girls Don’t Play Guitars
This show, a 2019 smash-hit, returns to the Royal Court in style! We go back to 1963, a time when Liverpool was the epicentre of the musical world. Indeed, BeatleMania was running wild, and so many Scouse solo artists and bands thrived. But not everybody received their flowers for the barriers they broke and the achievements they made. This show tells the story of the Liverbirds, an all-female group who defied the odds and left an indelible mark on the industry.
We meet Mary, Sylvia, Val, and Pam. They just want to play music, but the feedback from their peers is hardly encouraging. Even John Lennon advises them that, well, women shouldn’t play guitars. But rather than crumble, the four ladies aim to show the world that females are every bit as musically talented as males. And without providing too many spoilers, their journey is fascinating and groundbreaking as they crush stereotypes and redefine a woman’s place in music.
Analysis Of Girls Don’t Play Guitars
This show received tremendous acclaim during its previous run in 2019. And it’s richly deserved, as this was another superb production. The story itself is inspirational, as well as indicative of the times it which the story is set. Indeed, it’s bewildering to imagine such rife sexism in 2024, but it was sadly heavily prevalent in the 1960s. Fortunately, the central characters overcome this and establish themselves as a real success to the delight of the crowd.
Speaking of the audience, we thoroughly enjoyed the show from start to finish. Not least because of the fantastic 60s soundtrack that delivered one unforgettable and catchy tune after another. As a special treat, two of the original Liverbirds were in attendance and provided a memorable performance to close the evening. It was heartwarming and should inspire anyone who has talent but hears derogatory comments that they can’t do something. As this show proves, anything is possible.
Summary Of Girls Don’t Play Guitars
This show is an absolute treat. It works as both a trip down memory lane, and a history lesson for those unaware of the Liverbirds. The music is brilliant, the story is meaningful, the performances are exceptional, and the atmosphere is a feel-good vibe. Make sure to come to a show that is even better to watch now than during its previous run in 2019.
