This is our review of Giselle at Liverpool‘s Empire Theatre. So, let’s take a look at Giselle!

Synopsis Of Giselle

So, Giselle is a quiet and lovely girl who has eyes for Count Albrecht. However, Albrecht poses as Loys, a villager who appears innocent at first sight. Meanwhile, Giselle’s mother Berthe hopes instead for her daughter to marry the local forester Hilarion. Therefore, she tries to warn her daughter against opting for Loys instead.

We come to a large-scale dance where Berthe feels that her daughter is in grave danger. Amidst controversies and close calls, a hunt begins that greatly changes the dynamic of personal and romantic relationships. So much so that we see the demise of Giselle of her own accord. However, that’s not the end, but merely the end of the beginning. The story transforms as Hilarion looks to pay tribute to the fallen Giselle, only for surprises to occur from beyond the grave.

Analysis Of Giselle

This is a very entertaining and thought-provoking ballet production. Varna International leaves no stone unturned in presenting a pure yet original take on this classic tale. I personally appreciated the special effects on the big screen during the second half. Not to mention the authentic costumes and the eye-catching settings. Furthermore, the storytelling via dance is easy to understand, and with a running time of just over two hours, it’s a tight production.

Then, of course, we have the dancing itself. The routines are immaculately acted and remarkably disciplined, leaving one to wonder how the team pulls it off. There were plenty of standing ovations throughout the evening, and deservedly so. And because things progress slowly, we reach a big finish with some truly stunning moments of dance.

Summary Of Giselle

This was my first experience watching Giselle, and of watching a Varna International production. After attending, I would definitely welcome a return opportunity on both levels. This is a highly professional and expertly performed presentation of a vintage ballet story. One for all ballet fans.
