This is our review of Jesus Christ Superstar at Liverpool‘s Empire Theatre!

Synopsis Of Jesus Christ Superstar

It’s the album to inspire a revolution; a revelation to change the world; and a reinvention for modern times. It’s one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most epic shows, and it now comes to Liverpool! So, Timothy Sheader directs this amazing production of a global phenomenon of a show. And with Julian Clary making a guest appearance, it’s further reason to check out this iconic show.

So, we get to see the final few weeks of Jesus Christ’s life. This includes us witnessing his appeal to the masses, as well as his downfall not least after Judas’ betrayal. And of course, we witness the heart-wrenching and gritty details of his crucifixion. Meanwhile, we also experience plenty of legendary rock tunes, such as Gethsemane and I Don’t Know How To Love Him.

Analysis Of Jesus Christ Superstar

To say that this show is memorable – well, that’s an understatement. From start to finish, it’s full-on music with vocal ranges of the highest calibre. The audience stood and applauded numerous times before the inevitable and prolonged standing ovation to close proceedings. Along the way, we bore witness to the rise and fall of Jesus Christ.

This means we see every element of his personal struggle, with the events preceding his crucifixion standing out the most. Those scenes are rather bloody and violent, so the age rating of 10+ is arguably somewhat generous. However, the show also has its lighter moments, not least when Julian Clary had the crowd in stitches. Yet it’s the music that truly leaves a lasting impression; the singing performances are out of this world.

Summary Of Jesus Christ Superstar

It’s not a show for the faint-hearted, that’s for sure. But in terms of quality and production, this show is on another level to almost anything you will see. Make sure to head over to the Empire Theatre to watch one of theatre’s most famous, and infamous, productions. Sensational.

Overall Rating: 9/10 – Outstanding
