This is our review of Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby at Liverpool‘s Empire Theatre!
Synopsis Of Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby
You may know of a very popular TV show, Peaky Blinders. Well, this dramatic and innovative stage show brings the story of Thomas Shelby to life, from start to finish. Indeed, we go from the trenches of Flanders as we discover post-war life in the industrial city of Birmingham. Along the way, the Shelby’s make life-altering, and at times life-ending, decisions. Along the way, Tommy falls in love with an undercover agent by the name of Grace. Just as they tie the knot, tragedy strikes. And it’s up to Tommy to make a choice: fight for his life, or accept death.
But that only tells part of the story. Because this is no ordinary theatre production. Indeed, Rambert tell the entire story through the art of dance, with key plotlines accompanied by eye-catching routines. Furthermore, Roman GianArthur’s music, with famous tunes from the programme, plays a key role in proceedings. That’s because we have a life band on hand to perform dozens of accompanying songs, including some you must experience to fully appreciate.
Analysis Of Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby
There are numerous words that stand out when I describe this production. “Unique” is definitely one of those words, but also “epic”, and “special”. On arrival, the Empire’s Piano bar provided lots of visual reminders of the show, from noteworthy imagery to plenty of flat caps. (The audience also joined in the spirit with some distinctly post-war attire!) Fans of the TV show will know what it represents and how it portrays a gritty snapshot of post-war Britain. Yet, it’s still breathtaking to absorb the entire tale in person. Not least due to the chaotic nature and callous actions of the leading characters, led of course by Thomas Shelby.
Yet, as noted, the acting comes not through dialogue, but through dance. And the entire Rambert cast are spellbinding in their routines, providing several “how did they do that?” moments. The lighting and stage effects are also sensational, making the Empire seem larger and offering attendees on all levels with a full view. But I must give a special mention to Mitchel Emms, Joe Downard, and Yarron Engler. The trio provides the musical soundtrack, and their performances are truly incredible. Put it this way: if they were staging a concert, their performances are impressive enough. But in adding music and emotion to this already heavy show, they are absolutely phenomenal.
Summary Of Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this production beforehand. But what I got was a show that I won’t soon forget, one that thoroughly warranted its standing ovation. Peaky Blinders fans must come along and relive one of the more significant British TV shows of recent times. But even non-fans should attend to absorb an unforgettable show, and to discover the tale of Thomas Shelby.
