This is our review of Sister Act at Liverpool‘s Empire Theatre!
Synopsis Of Sister Act
Meet Doloris Von Cartier, a disco singer who lives life on the wild side. Too wild, perhaps; certainly, a contrast to the Nuns at the local convent. One wouldn’t ever expect to see Doloris at the convent, and certainly not in nun attire. But when Doloris witnesses a murder, she has to go on the run. And the only truly safe haven for Doloris is the convent.
Needless to say, she makes an immediate enemy in Mother Superior. As the head of the convent, she takes great offence to Doloris’ flamboyant attitude. But the other nuns quickly fall in love with her, especially when Doloris greatly improves the choir’s singing. But the ongoing chase by Curtis Jackson and friends reminds us that Doloris is in trouble. So, can she survive in the convent, or will Curtis take out the witness? And what role will police chief Eddie have in proceedings, especially when he doesn’t have a gun?
Analysis Of Sister Act
This show is, of course, based on the classic movie from 1992. And it’s ideally suited to the theatre stage with a zany plot, outlandish characters, and catchy songs. A big part of the show’s success concerns its cast. Landi Oshinowo is superb as Doloris, and Wendi Peters plays Mother Superior perfectly. But I must mention Alfie Parker, who almost steals the show as the good-hearted yet timid Eddie.
Elsewhere, the lighting and costumes are very eye-catching in the most positive way possible. Indeed, watch out for the striking attires as we reach the final scene! Furthermore, the show runs at a steady pace, allowing time for the story to breathe and for character development. And there are plenty of laughs along the way, so the show never takes itself too seriously. You will quickly find that out by watching!
