Story of The Castaways

The story follows two sisters who have been very closely involved in each other’s lives. With the youngest of the two actually living with her older sister and her husband. Something that has been causing a strain on their relationship. Unknown to the oldest, the sister knows of the husband’s infidelity but keeps the affair a secret. Only telling her sister when she is confronted with the idea of it. The two fight before getting on their flight. A flight that never arrives at it’s destination.

Tring to blow of steam from their big fight, Erin, the younger sister, ends up finding her way into the pilot’s bed. Only for him to steal her phone and have her miss boarding the flight. Erin waits to hear back of her sister Lori only to discover the plane went missing. What happened?

The miniseries follows us watching Erin uncover what happened to her sister. After she is tipped off to her sister being alive after her credit card is used on the isle of Fiji. As well as following life on the Island with Lori and other crash survivors. That’s as much of a brief description I can give, without getting to into detail and wading into spoiler territory.

Analysis of The Castaways

Sheridan Smith

Sheridan Smith bounces back in a big. Big way with The Castaways. Going against the comedic type cast she usually portrays; Lori is arguably her strongest character to date. She’s tough, a natural leader, stubborn, and determined. She is massively enthralling, and you do find yourself rooting for her like a cheerleader on the side of a football pitch.

 The Island

Just like in Lost the characters that survive the crash are not as they seem. The story slowly unravels their morals, past, and personalities. Providing more than noteworthy twist! You see Lori develop into a mortified survivor into the one thriving the most on the island. With a lot of the group slowly coming round to the idea of not trying to return to their old lives. Many of the survivors find love and happiness in their limited home. Allowing to be free from things like mobile phones, as Amber mentions. This could be seen as a sense of Stockholm Syndrome with the survivors eventually coming around to their captive- the island. Not wishing to try and escape the “safety” they have conformed to on the island.

Summary of The Castaways

The Castaways (TV Series 2023– ) - IMDb

Excellent performances across the board are seen within The Castaways but, the single breakout star has to be Sheridan Smith! Doing a against type role, she drops her usual comedic talents to showcase just how talented she is. Giving one of the best performances of all time in my opinion. She expertly showcases her emotions with little changes in body movement or facial cues and delivers her most complex character to date. You need to watch The Castaways even if it’s just to see Smith spread her wings as an actress and soar!

Overall Rating: 9 – Outstanding!

You can watch The Castaways on Paramount+, or on Amazon through the Paramount+ channel.
