Best Gotham Villains Ranked

Gotham is by far one of the greatest Superhero live-action series of all time. Having so many iconic character be explored further at a time before the Batman was a stroke of genius. Watching Jim Gordon try and fight back the evil that wishes to take over the city is so enthralling. Having him be a hero in his own right the show gives a new perspective to Jim and just how useful he is in keeping Gotham under control. But who gave Jim the biggest challenge over the seasons, who’s the most memorable? Well, were here to answer that as we give you the best Gotham villains ranked…

Best Gotham Villains Ranked Top 5

5 – Victor Szasz

Why Victor Zsasz Is The Real MVP Of Gotham

The entertaining contract killer quickly became one of the highlights of Gotham. Regularly appearing for multiple other villains in Gotham, Victor grows some sort of respect for Jim Gordan. This is by far the most exposure and character exploration Victor Szasz has ever got in any DC media and it really paid off. He charismatic body language and humour quickly disarmed you from being scared, only for him to efficiently dispatch of whoever is job is, or whoever in the way. The show allowed the actor to fully flesh out the character and stray from the bland serial killer he can be in appearances.

4 – Theo / Azrael

Gotham: "Azrael" Review - IGN

Azrael has featured in a few prominent DC properties. Appearing in the Arkham franchise Azrael offers up himself as a replacement for when Batman’s dead. Unfortunately, Azrael has been brainwashed by some religious group. This is what causes him to try and attack Batman in order to take his mantle over by force. Of course, Batman wasn’t having any of that and proceeds to defeat Azrael. The creatives behind Gotham had another idea in store for Azrael. Turning political character Theo Gallivan into the comic book character. His death is one of the most memorable by far as well. As penguin shoots him with a rocket at close range.

3 – Hugo Strange

Hugo Strange - Gotham - TV Fanatic

Hugo Strange is Arkham Asylum’s mad scientist and is responsible for several characters either gaining strength in their powers/abilities or straight up given them. Hugo’s character arc and story actually leads to an iconic scene where several super villains are shown to be offloading from a bus, after escaping the Asylum. One of the shadowy silhouettes was clearly meant to portray Killer Croc. Yet the tease never got followed up on. Until the final season where we got a lame excuse of a Killer Croc. Making Hugo Strange’s  biggest setup fall ultimately flat. However, the tension created by his Arkham Asylum still has my heart racing.

2 – Joker

Gotham shows first look at Joker on April Fool's Day | SYFY WIRE

Cameron Monaghan has rose up as an icon of geek culture. Starring as Gotham’s version of the Clown Prince of Crime the actor then went on to star as Cal Kestis in the Star Wars: Jedi series. The actor also portrayed another Joker within Gotham. Having him play two twins was a great way to showcase the young actor’s incredible talent. With my personal favourite being the first to appear. The way the second transforms is honestly so gripping and shocking it deserves to be memorialized in DC history.

Best Gotham Villains Ranked Top 1

1 – Penguin and the Riddler

Gotham' Series Finale Photos Reveal First Look at Penguin and Riddler

A bit of cheating/bending the rules now as I put not one but two villains as number 1. Mainly because of how much I loved seeing their friendship blossom and then sour. As the two hide their true feelings for each other, Penguin and Riddler are both people who rose from the gutters to positions of power. With Penguin formally an assistant to Fish Mooney and Enigma started Gotham working for the GCPD. That was until he brutally killed his love interest. Watching the two grow and develop into closer interpretations of the comic book counterparts was one of the biggest highlights of the series.
