As fans scrambled to watch the season finale at the late-night cinema screenings across the UK, they were faced by two big disappointments- the first being the identity of Ruby Sunday’s mother being revealed to be an average everyday woman when the entire season teased for a much bigger character revelation. The second being the apparent exit of the fan favourite character Ruby Sunday.
Ruby Sunday Exit – Further Details
More of The Pantheon
Just days ago, fans of the long-running sci-fi programme rejoiced as showrunner Russell T Davies attended San Diego Comic Con and promised a return for not only Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson) but also for the Pantheon of Gods that The Doctor has been fighting off against since the battle with the Toymaker in the sixtieth anniversary special titled ‘The Giggle’. Ncuti Gatwa, the actor portraying The Fifteenth Doctor revealed the season will be “continuing the Pantheon.” Suggesting the return of some God-like villains such as The Toymaker, Maestro, Sutekh or even The Trickster, which could suggest that Ruby Sunday’s happy ending might not be as ‘happy’ as she assumes it to be.
The Return of Ruby Sunday, and a New Companion?
Russell T Davies not only announced the return of Millie Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday to the next season, but he also revealed that there will be a huge shift in the dynamic of the relationship between The Doctor and Ruby as the show will be introducing a new companion called Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu (who appeared in the last season of the show as Mundy Flynn in the third episode of the season titled ‘Boom’). We don’t know much about the character of Belinda Chandra. But we do know that she will cause a rift and tension between the fan favourite duo of the last season.
The Mystery of Mrs Flood
In the upcoming season, fans expect a lot more of Mrs Flood (Anita Dobson). She is Ruby’s nosey and unsettling neighbour. And she seems to know a lot more about The Doctor and The Tardis than she is letting on. Mrs. Flood is a topic of discussion for fans since the 2023 Christmas Special, ’The Church on Ruby Road’. There, she broke the fourth wall and asked the audience if they’d ever seen a Tardis before.
In a recent interview, Anita Dobson revealed that we will not find out Mrs Flood’s identity this season. But she will get more screen time adding to the mystery of the character’s identity and connection to The Doctor.
Other than this, not much more information was given away. So, it’s clear to say that the appearance at San Diego Comic Con asked more questions than it answered. This leaves lots of room for fans to theorise the future of the fan-favourite sci-fi television series.
