Exploding Kittens is the latest franchise to get adapted into either TV or film. With the trend of getting any popular franchise’s rights for TV or film we see a lot of these adaptions turn out to be just pale imitations of what made the franchise great. I’m still holding out hope that the Vampire Survivors anime is good! Admittedly not being a player of the card game, it’s based on I came into the series not expecting much. Simply to enjoy Tom Ellis’ acting. The fact he was playing God as a cat extremely piqued my interest, so I decided to watch it. Which left me thinking, after I consumed the whole season in a few hours, Exploding Kittens had no right to be as funny or enjoyable as it did. So, with that let’s get into the premier season of Exploding Kittens….

Story of Exploding Kittens Season 1
The story of the premier season starts with God getting turned into Godcat and sent down to Earth to become more in touch with the humans he has since lost interest in. Seeing this as a good idea and not wanting Heaven to be the only ones using it, the council of Hell decide to do the same thing with Beelzebub. This leads to the two cats being at arms but also bonding over their mutual predicament, eventually even building to an attraction between the two.
Godcat’s mission whilst on Earth is to make life better for a family of humans. He does this simply to get back to Heaven originally but upon getting to know the family, Godcat grows a genuine affection for them.
Analysis of Exploding Kittens Season 1
Cast
The standout by far is of course the brilliant Tom Ellis. Who gives a phenomenal performance as Godcat. His dramatic flair, comedic value, and impressive vocal range makes him perfect for animation. I’m surprised it has took this long for anyone to give him the chance to show it! The rest of the cast are absolutely perfect. Sasheer Zamata gives an amazing turn as Beelzebub. Providing some much needed emotion when delivering dialogue. Be it rage or sadness, or a blend of the two.
Summary of Exploding Kittens
Firstly, the story they managed to get from a card game is damn right shockingly brilliant. It’s crazy genius at work. The cast was perfectly cast and game phenomenal performances the standout being of course the amazing Tom Ellis but not far behind him is Sasheer Zamata. Whose Beelzebub blends anger and sadness, beautifully and accurately showing the fragileness of someone in too deep and trying to prove themselves whilst keeping above water. All of this plus actually funny and enthralling writing which is all incredibly animated in bright vibrant colors. Exploding Kittens wasn’t expected to break TV norms or even win awards, but it is damn right enjoyable and arguably more so than it ever deserved to be. The silly inspiration is just that inspiration. The creatives behind this show have truly given it wings and watched it fly!
