Story of The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy: Season 1
The story follows two female doctors, Dr. Klak, and Dr. Sleech, as they uncover a worm like parasite that feeds of anxiety. Making the host feel happy as a clam no matter their circumstances or situation. As we are shown by a patient coming in and laughing when getting told she may well possibly die. As the parasite will keep eating until it becomes bigger than the planet and consumes everything, killing everyone.
The two face personal moral and medically ethical barriers as they debate what the correct course of action would be. Seeing all the acclaim and recognition that can come from a potential cure for anxiety, something that plagues each and everyone of us, they decide to hide the worm away.
Over the season the two explore the ethical implications of continuing to hide the parasite and researching on it. With Klak being the most inclined to risk humanity as she has been a victim to her anxiety every breathing moment. Will she be able to see the light, or will she give in to finding a cure?
Analysis of The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy: Season 1
Sci-Fi Setting
The outer space setting gives the creative team unrivalled freedom in storytelling, as with the advanced science often found in sci-fi provides a playground for writers. As anything you can think of, any illness, ailment, or surgery, any implant, or enhancement you can think of, you can make a reality. It also takes advantage of having different species of humanoids that all have different biology creating yet again freedom in storytelling as well as an actual unique hook in a very populated genre (hospital drama).
The character’s varying in species makes them feel more unique. It also provides several subplots for episodes as the show explores their stories more through out the season.
Summary
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is an amazing, animated offering from Prime. Blending medical drams with a sci-fi setting is a stroke of genius. The mix of genres work so well together. It can be a bit slow to get going and can put off viewers at times with it’s outlandish writing, but The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is a quality outing that can only improve in following seasons!
