Introduction

Well AEW might be about to do some very big business in a few months…. With AEW returning to Boston, many wrestling fans are hoping this heralds the return/debut of one of the best women’s wrestlers on the planet: Mercedes Mone. Whilst the artist formerly known as Sasha Banks has been injured for a while now, she still found time to squeeze in some phenomenal matches in her time in both NJPW and Stardom. For any WWE fans looking to see some top class independent women’s wrestling, Stardom is a must watch given some of the talent that’s come from there. Anyway, it’s boss time as we rank the best matches of Mercedes Mone/Sasha Banks.

10. Sasha Banks vs Bayley – Hell in a Cell Match for the WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship (Hell in a Cell 2020)

Almost immediately this will have annoyed some people with this match’s placement however there is a good reason it’s this low: The Thunderdome. As good as this match is, it’s easily the second best women’s Hell in a Cell Match, the fact it unfortunately fell during the pandemic era does hamper a lot of the rewatch value. However, if you can get into it it’s an absolute war with both women beating seven shades of s***e out of each other.

But what really makes this match so good is the creativity of the violence as both women try to be as cerebral as possible in breaking the other one down. As much as the pandemic hurts the rewatch value, this match is a perfect snapshot into Sasha/Mercedes’s best rivalry bar none. Also, the Golden Role Models carried the Thunderdome era at times which is another positive from this match.

9. Mayu Iwatani vs Mercedes Mone – IWGP Women’s Championship (Stardom All Star Grand Queendom)

Remember when I mentioned Mercedes’s brief catalogue of work post WWE? Well, this match is a prime example of that damn good work. And once again, it’s mostly because both women are going full strong style which is such a refreshing change from a lot of American women’s wrestling. Also, it helps that the crowd are super into Iwatani beating Mercedes which provides a lovely throughline to the whole match. As an introduction to new fans of Stardom and Mercedes Mone, it’s impossible to go wrong with this incredibly solid and entertaining match even if NJPW don’t give half a s**t about their women’s title.

8. Mercedes Mone vs AZM vs Hazuki – Triple Threat Match for the IWGP Women’s Championship (NJPW Sakura Genesis 2023)

Speaking of the IWGP Women’s Championship, this stellar triple threat from last year’s Sakura Genesis once again shows just how damn good Mercedes is. Oh, and take nothing away from her opponents, both of whom are more than a match for her. To this day, I still remember scrolling through Twitter and seeing the frankly, excuse the pun, boss finish in this match and wondering just how did WWE fumble her contract this damn much? I won’t spoil it but once again this is another hard hitting and technical match which shows just why fans are begging Mercedes to sign with AEW. Also, it needs to be said but I love how insane some of the moves were as all three women threw caution out of a window. Definitely worth tracking down….

7. Mercedes Mone vs KAIRI – IWGP Women’s Championship (NJPW Battle in the Valley 2023)

If anyone was concerned that months on the sideline may have slowed Mercedes Mone down, this match shuts all of those concerns down. Oh, and this was her first post WWE match. I mean it takes a lot to upstage one of the best women’s wrestlers on the planet and win the belt from her in your indy debut but Mercedes definitely did that. Also, this match saw the debut of her new finisher which is, again shameless pun redo, boss. This match is another perfect introduction to Mercedes’s post WWE work which is every bit as smooth and technical whilst also being slightly more strong style in nature.

6. Mercedes Mone vs Willow Nightingale – NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship (NJPW STRONG Resurgence 2023)

Now while Bayley is definitely one of Mercedes’s best rivalries, an emerging candidate for that title in the next couple of years could be Willow Nightingale. Mostly because of this match in the finals of the NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship tournament. Again, it’s a match which starts at 100 and never lets up as the Babe with the Power more than proves she can hang with the Boss. However, if there’s one downfall to this match it’s the Mercedes injury which unfortunately saps the life out of what was becoming a very good match. So, while the injury did overshadow Willow’s crowning, the first two thirds are damn good. A bit like Saltburn now I think about it…

5. Sasha Banks vs Becky Lynch – Hell in a Cell Match for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship (Hell in a Cell 2019)

We interrupt this Mercedes Mone best matches list to bring you some more of her work as Sasha Banks. This time it’s that aforementioned best women’s hell in a cell match opposite the Man: Becky Lynch. And if you thought the Bayley match was brutal, this is just as brutal if not slightly more. I mean they’re hitting double knees through tables and some brutal kendo stick shots. Granted, the weird spot of Becky dropping Sasha whilst the latter is sitting on top of a stack of chairs up against the cell. This match only further proves just how much AEW could gain with Mercedes if they book her well and give her decent stuff to do. Also, if you are planning a HIAC 2019 rewatch stop before THAT main event….

4. Sasha Banks vs Bianca Belair – WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship (Wrestlemania 37)

For as much as Sasha has a shocking record at Wrestlemania, the fact she’s so willing to put over younger talents to cement their rise is awesome. Case in point, her stellar match with Bianca Belair at Wrestlemania 37. While this match while go down in Botchamania infamy for Michael Cole’s miscall at the end, everything else was stunningly well done. Case in point, Bianca overhead pressing Sasha back into the ring or a hair whip which sounded like a gunshot. Even if you’ve never seen Bianca before, Sasha helps her look like a million bucks in what would turn out to be her penultimate Wrestlemania appearance (for now?)

3. Sasha Banks vs Bayley II – Iron Woman Match for the NXT Women’s Championship (NXT Takeover Respect)

Now, at this point any of the top five could make a case for being at number one so I take no satisfaction putting this match at three but that just speaks to how good Sasha is as a wrestler. Anyway, while sequels can often fail to live up to the hype this arguably tops the original at points. Case in point, the part when Sasha straight up makes Bayley superfan, Izzy, cry live on PPV by taking her ribbon and yeeting it like Kurt Zouma’s cats. Also, pure heel Sasha/Mercedes is the best version of her as she starts taking cheap falls and really gets under your skin which makes it all the more satisfying that Bayley eventually wins it to an enormous ovation. However no matter how good the sequel is, sometimes the original is better…

2. Sasha Banks vs Bayley – NXT Women’s Championship (NXT Takeover Brooklyn)

Speaking of that original match, this was arguably the gold standard of NXT Women’s wrestling for a very long time and it’s easy to see why. I mean this match had a damn avalanche reverse frankensteiner from the top rope which looked smoother than Steve Austin’s head. Also, while she’s not fully heel here Sasha leans into those tendencies as she starts to realise how much she underestimated Bayley throughout the match. All of this combined brings out the best in both women as they go to war and set up one of the best women’s rivalries in the history of wrestling. Also, that reaction for the final Bayley to Belly is one of the greatest moments in NXT history. However, there’s one match which just pips it to the top spot of my list….

1. Charlotte Flair vs Sasha Banks vs Becky Lynch – Triple Threat for the WWE Women’s Championship (Wrestlemania 32)

And the best Mercedes Mone/ Sasha Banks match is….. The triple threat match for the Women’s Championship at Wrestlemania 32. Not only was this the longest women’s Wrestlemania match at the time but it was the best match since Wrestlemania 22’s Trish vs Micky James match. Dodgy finish aside because of course Ric Flair had to be involved when there’s dodgy dealings, this is a sublime triple threat match which is the closest we’ve ever gotten to the fabled four horsewomen fatal four way. Anyway, there’s too many beautiful spots for me to list but I’ve got a soft one for the frog splash breaking up the Figure 8. Honestly, a match which keeps getting better on rewatch….
